Chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts said the main objective behind the US push for direct negotiations with Iran is to force the Islamic Republic to surrender to the policy of maximum pressure.
AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts said the main objective behind the US push for direct negotiations with Iran is to force the Islamic Republic to surrender to the policy of maximum pressure.
Addressing a periodic session of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran on Tuesday, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati highlighted the fruits of the strategy of “active resistance” in dealing with the enemies, saying such a policy has enabled the Lebanese Hezbollah to bring the Israeli regime and the US to their knees.
Hailing Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s expert guidance in combatting the hostile plots, Ayatollah Jannati warned against the dire consequences of talks with the US.
“The Americans hold negotiations to force us to accept whatever they want, and we would not emerge victorious in this type of negotiations,” the cleric warned.
Iran will never give in to the maximum pressures from the US, which seeks to shackle the Islamic Republic and force it to surrender, Jannati underlined.
Highlighting the results of resistance, the cleric said such an approach has forced the US administration to back off from responding to the downing of its military drone by Iran.
The chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts also said that resistance has enabled the Yemeni forces to launch drone strikes on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities, deal a heavy blow to the kingdom’s economy, and leave the Riyadh regime with no choice but to import oil.
“Resistance against the powers bombarding Yemen led to these victories,” he added.
In remarks last week, Ayatollah Khamenei slammed the US’ bid for talks with Iran as a trick, stressing that Iranian and US officials will not hold negotiations whatsoever, either in New York or anywhere else.
“If the US backs off from its call, repents, and returns to the nuclear treaty it has breached, then it will be able to join the gathering of the parties to the deal (JCPOA) who hold meetings and talk with Iran, otherwise no negotiations will take place between the officials of the Islamic Republic and the Americans at any level, not in New York and not anywhere else,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.
The US Department of the Treasury on Friday slapped sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran and the country’s sovereign wealth fund, a move US President Donald Trump described as the "highest level of sanctions".
The successive sanctions on Iran heightened after the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in May 2018.
