Renowned senior cleric and a symbol of public resistance against the tyranny and despotism in Gilgit-Baltistan, Agha Syed Ali Rizvi, has warned the federal and G-B governments that new protest movement would be launched if they imposed unjustifiable taxes on people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
“People of Gilgit-Baltistan are paying billions of rupees in terms of General Sales Taxes (GST) despite the fact that they are not granted full rights as citizens of Pakistan,” he said in an interview. He complained that people of the G-B are living below the line of poverty and lack needed essential facilities such as education, health, employment, etc. He said that not a single modern university, college or hospital of international standard has been established in their region. He said that the region was rich of resources and has potential of producing hundreds of thousands of megawatt of hydel power but this region has suffered from power outages.
Agha Ali Rizvi, who is also secretary general of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, said that people of Gilgit-Baltistan defeated the tyrannies by their unity and struggle. They turned down the propaganda of sectarianism, regionalism and ethnicity and struggled as one single community against the PMLN government on the issue of unjust taxes.
He demanded that due share be given to Gilgit-Baltistan in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. He demanded that more universities, colleges, schools, hospitals and industries be established in Gilgit-Baltistan to improve the living conditions of people of Gilgit-Baltistan instead of imposing unfair taxes on the already marginalized and disadvantaged and downtrodden people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
He lauded the role and struggle of Ghulam Hussain Athar of Anjuman Tajiran and Maulana Sultan Raees of Awami Action Committee G-B due to which anti-people plots of the PMLN government failed.
