Iraq's Hashd al-Shaabi attacks biggest Daesh base in Diyala

A senior commander of Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said his forces have attacked the biggest base of the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group in Hamrin Mountains in the eastern province of Diyala.
AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A senior commander of Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said his forces have attacked the biggest base of the Daesh terrorist group in Hamrin Mountains in the eastern province of Diyala.
In a statement on Saturday, Brigadier General Ziad Khalifa al-Tamimi, the commander of the 24th Brigade of the Popular Mobilization Units announced that the largest stronghold of Daesh terrorists in Diyala has been hit.
He added that the areas hit by the Hashd al-Shaabi included houses and motorcycles, as well as a cemetery of Daesh terrorists.
Last Sunday, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) announced that its forces had begun a massive military operation along the border with Syria to clear the area of Daesh terrorists.
Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.
However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, blunted the edge of Daesh offensive and later forced them to withdraw from the territories they had occupied.
In November 2017, the self-proclaimed caliphate of Daesh collapsed after Syrian and Iraqi armed forces and their allies managed to recapture the terror group’s last strongholds in the two Arab countries.
